  1. Don’t buy a Soleus. We have three, and all three leak from the floor of the unit. We have had to buy those plastic pans used under washers to be able to use the units without destroying our floors and ceilings below.

  2. I don’t own one of these units, but as a scientific type, I would warn people to be very careful of this unit. The title “evaporative air conditioner” is curious. Evaporative coolers work well, but only in very low humidity environments. They are popular in Arizona and New Mexico. They are not air conditioners. Air conditioners require fins, a compressor and a coolant. I’ve looked around a bit, but can’t find any real details on the operation of this device. Buyer beware.

  3. Worst buying decision I ever made! This unit when it works is great but it died after 5 weeks of limited use. Amazon refused to do anything to help me so I had to deal direct with the mfg. in California. They made me ship it back to them at MY expense and that cost me $139.43! It took them 2 months to ship me a new unit and when they did I found out that it was an earlier version

of the unit I returned! No way to shut off the drain and water just pours out if you mistakenly use it on dehumidifify. The version I bought had a valve on the drain and you could pick and choose when to empty the drain. When I purchased Amazon website said “local service” BALONEY! Since when is spending $139.43 to send a unit 1200 miles considered local service?

BUYER BEWARE of this unit and in buying something that is drop shipped halfway across the country because the MFG has not set up local service which I beleive is a violation of Washington State law!

I am now involved in a consumer affairs complaint and plan to sue Amazon in small claims court to get all my money back!

  4. I bought this unit mostly because of cooling capacity and being able to get it in one day by Amazon Prime shipping. I was very wary about this unit from the other reviewer’s concerns, but doing more research (Home depot’s web site has this model as well), noted that most people’s concerns were around the rather limited overflow tank capacity for water that the unit can’t evaporate into its exhaust.

That said, we’ve run this unit all day in 90-95F heat (a rarity in the Pacific NW) with about 50% relative humidity in our upstairs bedroom which is about 470 sqft. It worked well enough and got the temperature down to 73-75F within a few hours. I think this unit would excel in smaller rooms (200-300 sqft.). Due to our moderate humidity, we’ve not experienced the tank problems–if you live in humid environments, I don’t think this unit is for you.

Outside of that, this unit is a bit heavy, so it is “portable” in the sense that a 80lbs. suitcase with no handles and wheels is portable. And it is not quiet by any stretch of the word, but when I’m hot, it’s all about the cooling.

I would recommend this unit for people with rooms smaller than 400 sqft. and not dealing with high humidity–my room was a little too big for it (not the unit’s fault–I should’ve overestimated for a portable), but it still managed to keep us comfortable.

  5. If you are looking for a portable air conditioner/heat pump avoid this product and manufacturer. While the unit is satisfactory when running, once any problems develop that require service outside the warranty period, you may as well junk it. My unit lasted just 14 months and developed a leak that ruined my floor. Considering that I only used the air conditioning function during the summer, it only lasted one cooling season.

There is no local service network to fix even the most minor problem. I suppose that you could ship the unit back as was suggested by Soleusair for repair, but have you ever struggled with boxing and shipping a large unit that weighs 50 or 60 pounds, to say nothing about the premium shipping and repair cost. It is cheaply made and unreliable
